Character Profile – The Lost Artefacts: Freya

Freya stands as perhaps the most successful ravaged in the supernatural world, having transformed eternal servitude into a position of genuine influence and authority. At 194 years old, her appearance remains fixed as the young woman from the 1800s—when she made her fateful deal with The Reaper.

Distinguished by her ghostly movements, Freya carries herself with the confident authority of significant power despite technically belonging to The Reaper.

Born in the early 19th century, Freya grew up in a town dominated by a wealthy, corrupt man whose influence extended to every aspect of local governance. When this tyrant assaulted and killed her mother, Freya found herself in the impossible position of seeking justice against someone who controlled the very systems meant to provide it. This experience of absolute powerlessness led her to make the ultimate bargain.

Seeking out The Reaper, Freya traded her soul for the power necessary to overthrow the tyrant and free her town. She fulfilled this wish with ruthless efficiency, killing the man and dismantling his power structure. However, like all who make such bargains, she discovered that victory came with eternal servitude as one of The Reaper’s ravaged.

Where most ravaged resign themselves to their fate as The Reaper’s servants, Freya demonstrated remarkable adaptability and political acumen. Over decades of service, she gradually positioned herself as The Reaper’s lieutenant, earning enough trust to be granted oversight of other ravaged and establishing herself as second in the hierarchy of the soul-bound.

This position provided Freya the opportunity to build her own power base. Operating from Phantom Place—a formerly abandoned church repurposed as headquarters—she established a network that extends beyond ravaged to include various supernatural beings willing to engage in mutually beneficial arrangements. This organisation operates parallel to The Reaper’s soul collection, providing services without the permanent cost of souls.

Freya’s business model reflects her understanding of both supernatural politics and basic economics—offering concrete assistance in exchange for favors that can be called in later, building a web of obligation that extends her influence far beyond what The Reaper might have anticipated when claiming her soul.

Behind the business-like exterior and carefully managed operation lies a woman who has never forgotten the powerlessness that drove her original bargain—who has spent nearly two centuries ensuring she would never feel that vulnerable again, creating a form of power and freedom within the very bonds meant to constrain her.
