Character Profile – The Lost Artefacts: Odysseus

Odysseus embodies the pinnacle of canine companionship in the supernatural world—a Phoenine who chose Ajax “AJ” Thames as his human partner. As a large black Labrador with extraordinary abilities, Odysseus carries himself with the natural dignity of a creature who understands his role as both protector and friend.

Unlike ordinary pets, Phoenines possess enhanced strength, speed, and intelligence that mirror the Ascendant abilities of their chosen humans. Odysseus exemplifies these traits with his formidable combat capabilities, often fighting alongside AJ against daemons and other supernatural threats. His powerful jaws can dispatch enemies that would challenge even trained Ascendants.

The bond between Odysseus and AJ transcends traditional pet ownership. As AJ explains, Phoenines choose their Ascendants rather than being chosen, creating a connection that blends friendship, partnership, and mutual protection. This relationship manifests in their seamless battlefield coordination and Odysseus’s uncanny ability to understand complex commands without explicit instruction.

Beyond combat, Odysseus demonstrates remarkable tracking abilities, capable of following scents across challenging terrain and through supernatural interference. This skill proves invaluable on multiple occasions, allowing him to locate individuals when other methods fail. His tracking accuracy suggests a supernatural connection to the world around him.

Despite his formidable abilities, Odysseus retains many endearing dog-like qualities—enthusiastic greetings, playful barking, and occasional mischief. He displays particular affection for Lincoln, often licking his face as a sign of acceptance and friendship. These moments of ordinary canine behavior provide welcome contrast to the extraordinary nature of supernatural conflicts.

Odysseus shows remarkable loyalty not just to AJ but to the entire group, readily responding to commands from El and others when circumstances require it. This broader sense of pack mentality makes him a reliable ally in dangerous situations, as he intuitively understands which member of the group needs his assistance most urgently.

In moments of crisis, Odysseus demonstrates intelligence that far exceeds that of normal animals—making tactical decisions, prioritising threats, and adapting to changing circumstances without direction. This autonomous capability transforms him from simply a powerful animal into a genuinely strategic combat partner.
