Character Profile – The Lost Artefacts: Kane Riverun

Kane carries the weight of Eden’s tragic history in his bearing—a once-proud member of the Queen’s Guard reduced to servitude under a regime he despises. As a water nymph with military training, his movements retain the precision of his former position despite years of forced submission.

Before Methuselah’s rise to power, Kane served with distinction in Lady Sequoia’s personal guard alongside his wife Becca. His dedication to the Queen went beyond mere duty; like many of Eden’s inhabitants, Kane held genuine reverence for Lady Sequoia’s compassionate leadership and vision of peaceful coexistence with the outside world.

Distinguished by his unkempt appearance—messy black hair and a scraggy beard that often holds remnants of previous meals—Kane’s physical state reflects his internal degradation under Methuselah’s rule. This disheveled exterior stands in stark contrast to the disciplined guardian he once was, a visual reminder of how far he has fallen.

Following Lady Sequoia’s death at the peace summit, Kane and Becca were among the first to question the official narrative surrounding the tragedy. This scepticism evolved into open rebellion as they gathered like-minded nature spirits who refused to accept Methuselah’s increasingly tyrannical rule. Their resistance movement represented the last organised opposition to the new king’s authority.

The failure of their rebellion led to devastating personal consequences. While Becca was sentenced to fight for her life in the Arena, Kane was told she had been executed—a psychological torture designed to break his spirit completely. Believing his wife dead, he was forced into servitude as Methuselah’s errand-runner, carrying out the king’s orders while being paraded around as an example of what happens to those who resist.

Behind the defeated exterior and obligatory obedience lies a warrior whose tactical mind remains sharp, whose loyalty to Eden’s true ideals has never wavered, and whose capacity for sacrifice reveals a depth of character that even years of humiliation have failed to diminish.
