Lincoln is a resilient sixteen-year-old who has spent most of his life bouncing between foster homes in New York City. Abandoned at an orphanage at age five with nothing but a mysterious silver chain around his wrist, he has grown into a master of escape—both literally and emotionally. Lincoln prides himself on his ability to escape any situation, having perfected the art over years of moving between temporary homes.
Lincoln finds solace in books, which offer him glimpses into worlds more exciting than his own. He’s developed a self-protective emotional detachment, rarely allowing himself to form connections with his foster families after experiencing repeated disappointments.
The one constant in Lincoln’s life is his friendship with Liv Sommers, whom he met in foster care when they were both ten. Though Liv was eventually adopted by a family of collectors who frequently travel, leaving Lincoln on his own, they’ve maintained their connection through the years. She represents the only true friendship he’s allowed himself to develop.
Lincoln carries his silver chain everywhere—the sole connection to his past and the parents he barely remembers. Though outwardly appearing as just an ordinary teenager with brown eyes and dark hair, there’s something distinctive about him that seems out of place in the mundane world he inhabits. Despite his efforts to blend in and remain detached, Lincoln can’t shake the feeling that he’s meant for something more significant than the cycle of foster homes and temporary attachments that define his current existence.
It is only when, by chance, upon being attacked one evening after running away from yet another foster home Lincoln discovers there is more to his world than meets the eye. Daemons, Nature Spirits, Sorcerers, and more inhabit his world in secret, with this daemon attack changing Lincoln’s life forever…
